ACAHS recognizes the decision to study abroad is quite possibly the biggest decision of your life. With that in mind, we will treat you and your journey as if we were you. We feel very strongly that your ability to be successful in our Personal Support Worker (PSW) program will be directly connected to you having your basic needs safely met. That is why we have partnered with Welkom-U (https://www.welkom-u.ca/) for the following settlement services:

  1. They will pick you up at the airport.
  2. They will secure a nice place for you to live that you can pay month to month or decide to sign a yearly lease.
  3. They will help you obtain your provincial Medicare health insurance. ACAHS has partnered with Guard.me (https://www.guard.me/) to provide your health care insurance while you wait for your provincial health insurance.
  4. They will help you obtain a cell phone.
  5. They will assist you with setting up a bank account.
  6. They will help you identify transportation resources.
  7. They will help you obtain your Social Insurance Number (SIN). You will need this to work in the province. You may work full or part time and we are happy to connect you with PSW employers.

Why ACAHS?

Our Personal Support Worker (PSW) program blends online virtual classroom for the theory, Monday thru Friday 8am-1pm. You will not have to attend in person classroom sessions. As long as you have a learning device and wifi, you can study from anywhere in New Brunswick.

Your PSW practicum will be hosted by a long term care facility in your community. Most students work for these long term care facilities while they are students in our PSW program. We encourage this! We also encourage you to work with a long term care facility that is designated under the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) or who is willing to participate in the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP). Both of these programs are established pathways to Permanent Residency.

Personal Support Worker (PSW) for International Students

Our PSW program was developed by 3 University of New Brunswick Nursing Educators with curriculum resourced from an Environmental Scan of all PSW programs throughout Canada (except Quebec). Our curriculum was also developed based on the New Brunswick PSW Certification standards. As a result, our PSW graduates are prepared to work in any environment that employs PSW’s (ie. Hospitals, homes, long term care facilities etc) and your certification is portable between the provinces. Should you move to another province the process, for having your PSW nursing credentials approved by that province, is the same as it is for RN’s and LPN’s to have their designations recognized.

It is a 54 week program comprised of 37 weeks of online classes , 15 weeks of practicum, 2 weeks of break time and two 12 hour laboratory sessions.
